Course Description:

This course is a study of both composition and literature.  A study of basic grammar skills is an integral part of the study of composition.  The emphasis will be on sentence structure, sentence variety, punctuation, correct spelling, and paragraph development.  Students will study the various stages of writing:  prewriting, drafting, and revising.  The literature units will include 1) short stories, 2) poetry, including excerpts from The Odyssey, 3) novels, and
4) drama, including excerpts from Romeo and Juliet.  The literature portions will also emphasize literary elements, comprehension skills, and vocabulary development. A study skills unit is taught early in the school year.  This unit emphasizes good study habits, organization of time and materials, and also the importance of listening skills, proper note taking, and reading methods suited to subject matter.

Course Description:

Course Description:

This course is a study of both composition and British/world literature and its application to today’s world.  Improvement of reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills of the students will be emphasized.  Students will practice the critical and analytic thinking skills necessary for continued education and/or employment. This course provides the student with practice in job-related language skills and includes a career-oriented research paper.   Students will continue to improve reading and vocabulary skills and will write and send various forms of business correspondence.

Course Description:

Composition 110 dual credit course - The students progress from writing expressive compositions (expressing the ideas of the writer) to writing referential compositions (explaining or analyzing the subject matter for the reader) to writing persuasive compositions (persuading an audience), through critical reading, discussion, exercises, conferences, and revisions.  The majority of the writing is referential.  Included in the course will be various readings throughout the semester.  Students enrolled in this course may receive three hours of college credit through Illinois Central College.

Course Description:

This course is devoted to a chronological survey of British literature. The survey begins with the primitive Anglo- Saxon times through the Renaissance.  Students will read and perform scenes from the Shakespearean drama Macbeth.  They will read, interpret, and analyze selected pieces of literature in order to demonstrate the expressive qualities of the arts.  Practice in critical and analytic thinking in the form of reading and writing will be included in this course of study.  The syllabus includes group work, class discussions, essays, and films.  Novel and vocabulary study will complete this course.

Course Description:

This class is for students whose first language is not English.  It replaces the regular English classes for two years and then provides support when students are placed in regular English classes the junior and senior years.
